4th Grade Reading

Our Reading Series is by Kendall/Hunt.  Pegaqsus II provides a balanced approach to reading using nine cross-curricular themes.  There are activities in Math, Science, Health, and the Humanities.  The skills covered are Extended Reading and Writing, Comprehension and evaluating ideas through listening, reading and reference skills

Books read in class and used to develop reading skills:

A few pages of each book are read, a paragraph at a time, by students around the room and then a break is taken to review and analyze what they have read.

Relevant story issues are dissected by asking

Who, What, When, Where, Why questions

Here is Mrs. Douglas writing on the Smart Board a student’s answer to the Why question.

Often the students are invited up to write their answers on the board.

Study guide pages challenge student with vocabulary, character studies, and action verbs among other things.

To augment the story and immerse the students in the story environment during the classroom discussion, relevant videos are shown and character (i.e., animal) sounds played.  The Internet has a wealth of short relevant video and sound clips.

Most often these multimedia events are controlled from the touch sensitive Smart Board on which the study guide pages are being projected.  The classroom contains Surround Sound audio speakers so the students are exposed to the maximum multimedia experience.

Following the classroom reading of the book the students take the AR quiz and most often score high.  AR quiz points are converted to AR Dollars for the AR Auction.  See Student Recognition for further info.

Audio Books played for students just after noon recess:

The students take an AR quiz after listening to the audio books and generally score very high.
