Work Policy

This course has been designed to prepare you for a successful future.  In order for this success to occur, each student must take responsibility for his/her learning.  This includes participation in class as well as completion of all assignments.  Homework will be due at the beginning of class the day after it has been assigned—NO EXCEPTIONS!  Due dates for assignments and projects are just that—due dates.  Also, please be prepared for all presentations at the beginning of class.

Mandatory Study Table

Grade sheets will be distributed every Monday.  If a student is failing, he/she must spend a minimum of 60 minutes at Study Table the following week.  Study Table will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, from 3:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.  Students will earn points for attending Study Table and will work on assignments that will raise the student’s grade to a passing mark.  If Study Table is not attended, the student will be referred to the office for ISS.  At that time, the work that was missed at Study Table will be accomplished.

Needed Materials

You will need the following for this class:

§        Loose leaf notebook paper

§        1 set of five divider sheets (Senior Support notebook)

§        1 set of eight divider sheets (Senior Project notebook)

§        blue or black ink pens

§        pencils

§        1-1 inch binder notebook (Senior Support notebook)

§        1-2 inch binder notebook (Senior Project notebook)

You will need your class notebook and writing utensils to class everyday, unless you are told differently.  Materials for the Senior Project notebook will be brought to class on the days requested by the teacher.

Because final drafts of essays are required to be typed, students need to secure a place to type.  The computers in my classroom are available from 8 a.m. until 8:25 a.m. and from 3:10 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.  It is the student’s responsibility to find a place to type and to do so allowing the assignment to be handed in on time.

Electronic Devices

Because of distractions to the learning environment, cell phones, pagers, and musical devices of all types are not to be brought into the classroom.  Any that are found with a student, will be confiscated for the day.  If it happens again, the device will be given to the office.

Grades

All assignments are recorded as points.  The points are determined according to the percentage of total points assigned.  The grade scale is as follows:

Note on Attendance

Because the purpose of this class is to support you during your senior year, you need to be in class everyday.  If you are ill, please stay home.  However, make arrangements to get the work you missed. You will have opportunities to make up missed work for excused absences.  Because you are given a calendar of activities at the beginning of every week, please select your other absences carefully.  Unless it is an extreme emergency, you will not have opportunities to make up presentations or other class activities that are planned for a specific date.  If you acquire very many unexcused absences or failure to make up excused absences, it will result in a lower grade.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Tardies

If you are late for class (for any reason) and have not talked with me first, you will lose 1/2 of your daily points.  After three tardies, you will be required to make up 15 minutes after school (regardless of sports practices or work commitments).  After four tardies, you will be referred to the office for the appropriate action.

Leaving the Classroom

Please do not leave the classroom without permission.  Once you are in my classroom, you are my responsibility.  I need to know where you are during those minutes of our time together.

Attire

The classroom is a place of learning.  Therefore, it is important to keep the atmosphere one of a professional place.  Appropriate clothing, as described in the 2005-2006 Handbook will be adhered to.  Remember, any piece of clothing that offends the teacher is not appropriate.  Also, do not where hats in the classroom.

Food in the Classroom

Please do not bring food or beverages into the classroom unless arrangements are made.  This includes water.  There is a drinking fountain outside the room that is available for students’ use.

Language

Since this is an English classroom, appropriate formal English is expected to be the language of choice.  Any inappropriate language directed at a fellow student or the teacher will not be tolerated.  The following will be the procedure used in this class to deal with inappropriate language:

1st time: To the principal for the remainder of class, letter home, letter in your file.

2nd time: Out of class until a meeting with the student, the teacher, the principal, and a parent or guardian has been completed.

3rd time: Removal from class until the next semester.

The Golden Rule

As a professional, I expect to be treated as such.  This means treated with kindness and respect.  In return, it is expected of me to treat each student the same.  Let us all create a learning atmosphere that is conducive for success for everyone in the classroom.
