Elementary students jumping rope to raise funds

Our Waitsburg elementary students more than doubled their fundraising goal for this year's Jump Rope/ Shoot Hoops for Heart competition! With an initial goal set at $2,000, students in kindergarten through 5th grade raised $5,185 for the American Heart Association during February 2021.

Led by program coordinator Kathy Schirm, K-5 students  jumped rope and shot hoops in small groups during the annual competition. The kick-off assembly was held via Zoom in January, followed by the competition on February 9th and 12th in the high school gym. This annual fundraiser teaches students the importance of a healthy lifestyle in addition to making a difference and providing an important community service to help those with heart diseases through raising funds for research and support.

As an incentive, any student who raised at least $60 gets to silly-string Superintendent Mark Pickel. Little did Superintendent Pickel know that he would be facing 32 students who met that goal! Other incentives for this year's fundraiser include the top student (most funds raised) getting to be PE Teacher for the day (that prize goes to 4th grader Colt Boudrieau), and the top class (4th grade) earning a popcorn party.

Congratulations to our amazing students and our equally amazing and supportive Waitsburg community. You all showed a lot of heart!
